Lorna Hollifield

This week Lorna Hollifield is the interviewed author telling us about her writing life. She is a Southern Fiction author and writer of life’s wonderful journeys. Her debut novel, Tobacco Sun, is published by Pen Name Publishing.  It is on sale now through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kindle, and many more!

- How do you spend your writing day?

Ha!  I literally change from one pair of pajamas to another and go to town!  I'm not an early riser. I feel best mid-day, so I tend to write until early afternoon, with a La Croix nearby for hydration!  I'll then get a little A.D.D. and do something else for a while.  Idea time and brainstorming tends to happen late at night.

- Where is your favorite spot to write?

I like to curl up on the couch or somewhere very comfy. Desks aren't really my thing.  I also need silence, or I tend to get distracted.  Once I'm going, though. I hear nothing.  It will take someone forever to get my attention or pull me out of it.

- What is your editing process?

I make small edits as I go, but the big edit comes after I get it all out.  I also add twists and foreshadowing at this stage. It's easy to plug those in once I know the whole story.  It's hard to edit your own work though, when it comes to careless mistakes.  My editor is the one to catch those!

- What is the best writing advice you can give for aspiring writers?

The writing is the easy part...if you're in love with it, you can't help it.  Getting it seen or published is a different beast.  Be fearless, even if you have to fake it for a while.  Leave your front porch, network, meet other writers, go to conferences.  Find opportunity.  Nobody will beg for your manuscript.  Even the best have to fight with every weapon God gave them.  Do it now, because it takes time.  Believe in your ability, shake off the haters, and fight for it.

- What do you read and how often do you read?

I read at least one book per month, but try to do more.  I've always enjoyed writing more than reading.  I like to create, but I can also get lost in a great story.  I love southern authors like Pat Conroy, and Toni Morrison.  I love my fellow SC writer, Mary Alice Monroe. However, I'm a HUGE fan of Kate Morton.  She can really spin a yarn!
