Read this inspiring author interview with Jenn Bregman. She has written a fast-paced thriller The TimeKeepers and is currently working on her second book in the serie. Jenn Bregman is a white-collar criminal defense lawyer and has loved writing since her childhood.
- Typical writing day look like?
Like all of us, I have a busy and, often unpredictable, life so the only time I can be sure I have the quiet and space I need to write is in the morning. My tush is in the chair from 5:00-7:00 a.m. without excuse (ok, with FEW excuses!). Even if I had a late night or other things going on and am not that productive, I find that the discipline of writing at a certain time and place each day is worth it. Then, I write from 2-3 more hours during the day catch-as-catch-can, but having the foundation of two solid hours already in the bank makes the rest of the day work better too!
- How long?
Oh, this is a tough accounting! It took two years to write The TimeKeepers and two more years to get it published.
- Favorite part when writing a book and where do you prefer to write?
I know this is weird, but I LOVE starting a book. I love opening up a brand new white Word document and staring at the blank screen! I know most writers hate this part but I just feel endless possibility and freedom. Who knows what the characters will do and where the story will go? To me, it feels like I'm standing on the beach looking at the seemingly limitless expanse of an ocean filled with all the same kind of unknowns and mystery. But while I enjoy looking at the ocean and do use it for inspiration, I write at my desk, in my office, at home. I need quiet and I need to pace -- mostly around the room, but sometimes around the whole house!
- Writing advice?
The best advice I have ever received is the same advice I give to aspiring writers. Just finish it! There is a compelling tendency to give up about halfway through a book (or any large project for that matter). It's hard. You don't think it's good. It's taking too long, blah, blah, blah. But the truth is, you can't edit what you don't have and you don't know what you have until you're done. So just finish! It may be good, it may be crummy, but finish it. You will be proud you did.
- What are you writing?
I'm working on the sequel to The TimeKeepers. It involves two of the main characters that continue and is set in New York, one of my favorite cities in the world. I love working on it! I love taking the characters through some of my favorite stomping grounds. I can't wait to get up each day and dig in. This book is the second of three. The last book is set in Colorado and I have the final scene all mapped out in my head and heart. I see the complete arc of the story from here. I only hope I have the skill and talent to write it the way I see it! :)
- How often do you read and what?
I read as much as I can, usually right before bed. I love thrillers -- of course -- so I read a lot of John Grisham. But I have also been reading a lot of literary fiction lately and really enjoyed All the Light WeCannot See and Tinkers. Both of these are beautifully written and inspired glimpses into being human.
