What does your typical writing day look like? Do you have a daily or weekly word count?
I don’t get many writing days at the moment but when I do, I like to start early – without checking my emails, notifications or anything else that might distract me – and then write as fast as possible (which unfortunately isn’t very fast). If things go well I barely stop, even to make coffee, but I try to get up and stretch every now and then. If I hit a mental block in my writing I’ll do the washing up or a bit of dusting, still writing in my head. I don’t have a word count to aim for because the other areas of my life are pressured enough.
How did your start writing?
I was always reading books and writing short stories and poems as a child, but it’s only recently that I’ve really started writing in earnest – I had an idea for a story and the characters kept holding conversations in my head. It was a case of start writing it down or go slowly mad.
Let us know about your journey to becoming an author.
That story in my head became a 100k word manuscript. To be perfectly honest I hadn’t really considered what I might do with it – I’d simply enjoyed writing it – but I have a best friend who is a successful author and after reading it she was kind enough to introduce me to her publisher, Accent Press. To my amazement they offered me a contract and, in March 2015, published my debut novel – Kindred Hearts. I still feel incredibly lucky and grateful and it has spurred me on to write a series of three more standalone novels.
What is the best advice you can give to aspiring authors?
If you enjoy writing, write, and keep writing – you never know where it might take you.
What are you writing on at the moment?
Safe With Me, the first book in The Wildham Series, is published on 22nd June 2017 and I am currently editing the next two books in the series. I have also started writing a fourth.
What do you read and how often do you read?
I enjoy reading fiction in a variety of genres from romance to psychological thrillers to science fiction. I read every night in bed before I go to sleep, even if it’s really late, and I never travel anywhere without a book or my kindle.
Safe With Me blurb:
An emotional and evocative story about the deepest bonds of friendship.
Abandoned as children, Kat and Jamie were inseparable growing up in foster care. But their bond couldn’t protect them forever.
From a troubled upbringing to working in a London greasy spoon, Kat’s life has never been easy. On the surface Jamie’s living the high-life, but appearances can be deceiving.
When they unexpectedly reunite, the bond they share becomes too intense to ignore. But as secrets come back to haunt them, are they destined to be separated once more?
Perfect for fans of Hilary Boyd and Nicholas Sparks.
